In the previous article I addressed the impact of Mars in our health, specially the effects of the exceptionally long transit of Mars in the sign of Libra from Dec 7, 2013 to July 26, 2014, on people with natal Mars in Aries.
The planet Mars, named after the god of war, represents in our natal chart the type of warrior we are, for what or for whom we fight. Synchronically, I wrote this article in Portuguese while Nelson Mandela’s memorial service was being broadcast; he is a great example of a fighter (Mars) for equality among men (Libra).
Today I am not commenting on heroes, but rather talking about all of us who have Libra somewhere in our natal chart, a sign that is going to be affected by comings and goings of Mars on those degrees, on that house and life spheres that it symbolizes.
Libra is the only sign of the zodiac represented by an object. The British astrologer Sue Tompkins writes that having no animal or person associated with the symbol indicates that it is a very “civilized” sign. (Personally I think that translating into other languages it means “without great passion”).

Mars, the planets of competition, of conquest, of immediate satisfaction (I want now) will remain for seven months in an air, cerebral and civilized sign! It does not feel very comfortable there and in traditional astrology Mars in Libra is termed in its detriment.
Libra is the sign of “the other”, ruled by Venus, one of the significators of relationships, be it intimate, between close friends and associates.
Does this mean that for the 231 days period that Mars in the skies is in Libra all of us are going to experience relationship conflicts?
The answer is – not all of us – but following groups will be more sensitive to this long transit of Mars:
- A small percentage of humanity will be really hit hard – those with lots of planets in Libra in the 7th house of relationships;
- People with lots of planets in Libra;
- And those with the Descendant in Libra, that is with an Aries rising sign.
Astrology is a great tool for prevention rather than for prediction. For everybody in one-on-one relationships, but specially the above groups, here is a road map for the next seven months. For other types of relationship apply the same principles with slightly different approaches.
I see the positive side of Mars in its detriment because I have natal Mars in Libra. I trust it will help reach happiness and peace at personal and global levels.
I think that John Lennon (Mars in Libra) and Martin Luther King (Libra in the 7th house – my rectification) were addressing mundane affairs but these are thoughts worth remembering and applying at personal level:
John Lennon “Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will be as one.”
Martin Luther King “Peace is not merely the absence of war, but the presence of justice.”
