• At school – the multiplication table … 8 X 8 = 64

• For the esoteric … 64 = 43 represents the four elements elevated to the third power, in full expansion

• In China – the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching

• In India – the 64 forms of Shiva

• In the Gospel of Luke – the number of generations between Adam and Jesus

• For chess players – the board

• But for people of my generation:

DiscoWhen I’m Sixty Four, one of the songs on the album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Beatles.

This record was realeased when I was a teenager, and at the time I found this tune odd, inconsistent with the rest of the psychedelic tracks of the album, such as “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” or “With a Little Help from my Friends”. Only recently, did I realize it was a tribute to Paul McCartney’s father who was around that age.

At 16, I could not envision life 48 years later. If I had thought about it, which I doubt, as I was busy with other interests, I should thought that I would be ancient, one foot to the grave.  Lo and behold, precisely three days ago, I reached that age, and I can say “I’m Sixty Four”.

The lyrics of the song has nothing to do with me because I have no relational issues, today my husband and I celebrate our 28th anniversary of a happy married life, have lots of hair, I enjoy cooking and going to bed early and do not knit.  The grandchildren part sounds familiar – they are not Vera, Chuck and Dave, but Thomas, Teddy, Zach, Alice, Oliver and Isabel….

What sounds really good are the verses of the poem The VALUABLE TIME OF THE MATURE by the Brazilian poet Mario de Andrade:

 I counted my years

And I found that I will have less time to live from now on

Than I have lived so far

I have more past than future.

I feel like the little boy who received a bowl of cherries.

At first he sucks them carelessly,

but realizing that only a few remain, chews them to the pit.

And like the poet my inference is:

I do not have time to deal with mediocrity.

I do not want to attend meetings where inflamed egos parade.

I do not have time for endless conversations,

to discuss useless issues about the lives of others

that do not even concern me.

My soul is in a hurry …

My intentions for the future side with the poet’s:

 To live alongside people…  people,

who are very human; who laugh at their blunders,

not dazzled by triumphs,

who do not feel chosen before their time,

who do not run away from mortality.

To walk close alongside real things and real people …

In order to be a real person I have some work to do: to put aside the anger, quit comparing  and passing judgments, stop being afraid, cut the shackles of guilt and give more hugs, more love, be more generous and more helpful to those in need .

Astrologically speaking, around 64, Uranus by transit makes a 90°degree angle (square) to natal Uranus. It is a rather rebellious energy, kind of “I do not give a damn” or do not recognize the authority of institutions.  It is energy of feeling alive, of craving excitement.

In the words of another poet, the Portuguese Fernando Pessoa, if one does not want to be “a postponed corpse” a little madness is needed and being sixty-four is as good a time as any.  Therefore, this week I will celebrate my birthday with one of these!

Hurray to sixty-four, and if I have one foot to the grave it is because the zip line broke AHAHAHAHAHAH!
